How To Clean The Kitchen Hood From Fat

If you, cleaning up the kitchen, noticed that the hood has become too dirty, it’s time to clean it. But, the degree of its contamination may be an unpleasant surprise for you.

If your hood is used for too long, and the dirt on it is not particularly strong, then, most likely, it will be enough to wash its grate in a hot soapy solution.

You can make such a solution, for example, based on your dishwashing detergent or ordinary household soap.

Boiling is a reasonably effective way to remove even old accumulations of fat from the surface of the filter of your hood.

To perform this simple procedure, you will need a large pot that can accommodate the entire grill or at least half of it.

  • Initially, we prepare a solution based on salt, soda and laundry soap.
  • To do this: grate about half a bar, add a glass of salt and 2-3 tablespoons of soda, stir it all well until completely dissolved.
  • The water level in the tank should be to completely cover the filter (or simply the maximum allowable).
  • The duration of boiling is on average 7-10 minutes.
  • If your grate does not fit entirely in the pan, it must be turned the other side and continue boiling for another 5-10 minutes.
  • If there are old-old fat stains on the grate, leave it in this hot solution for another couple of hours (we turn off the burner).
  • After this time, clean the grate of fat residues with a sponge or brush.

It remains only to rinse well under a stream of running water and admire the brilliant result of your work.

After “cooking” a dirty filter, be prepared that a nasty and fatty solution is formed in the pan.



Sometimes the hood grille is so clogged with old fat that it resembles a hive grid with honeycombs full of honey. In particularly advanced cases, this fat begins to drip on the stove.

In such cases, folk remedies will not help much; you need to connect “heavy artillery” – household chemicals.

Now we will tell you how to wash the hood in the kitchen from heavily eaten and old fat with the help of such modern potent agents.

The arsenal of such chemistry is more than impressive. We advise you to pay attention to such means as:

  • foam intended for cleaning ovens, grills, braziers TOPCleanner or PowerWash;
  • Amway oven cleaner;
  • gel for cooking surfaces and cookers Sanita, Milam;
  • cleaning powders, in particular, Bugs Shuman.

When dealing with any household chemicals, especially such aggressive, do not forget to use rubber gloves that will protect the skin of your hands from chemical burns.

Another fairly cardinal way to clean the metal mesh of the hood filter is means for removing blockages of sewage collectors and sewer pipes.

Such household chemicals are guaranteed to remove even severe contaminants. Still, they should be used only in an emergency because the substances that lead to their composition can resolve the metal.

If you are not afraid to lose an essential element of your hood, then put the grille in any stainless container, sprinkle on top of the granules of the product or apply the appropriate gel.

Now pour hot water. You have to see things start to hiss and bubble.

Leave for a short time, no more than 20 minutes, after which very thoroughly rinse with water.

The used solution will be better poured into the toilet.



We understand that it is unlikely to exclude the settling of fat and soot on the filter grid.

Of course, if you mainly cook food for a couple, then pollution will not accumulate as much as with constant frying.

But,there are so many delicious dishes in Slavic cuisine that can not be cooked without frying or stewing.

But you can eliminate the profound accumulation of fat by regular cleaning. Make it a rule to wash the hood once a month.

This procedure will require 5 minutes, but the hood will always delight you with its purity and high functionality.

And by the way, since you decide to wash the grille, do not forget to clean the outer parts of the hood (facade, sidewalls, lower position).
